What started off as a quiet warm-up in the “heavy lifting” corner of the gym ended up as a “party” of sorts, with a lot of different folks congregating in the northwest corner. I had the rings hanging from the power rack and one of the older guys said the last time he saw that was in the monkey cage at the zoo. My response was, “Well, meet the monkey!” We had ring work going on, deadlifts, squats, miscellaneous banter, personal trainers and their clients passing through.
While it got a little busy, I got in a nice combo of deadlifts and GHD sit-ups with minimal rest in between. My deadlifts were seven singles of 75% of 1RM which is 305#. In between each single, I did 15 reps of GHD sit-ups.
I added some overhead presses, starting with 45×10/95×5. I then added mini bands to the 95# and did 1 set of five with the bands wrapped on the top horizonal bar of the squat rack and then did 5×5 with the same weight but tougher with the bands wrapped around the lower horizontal bar to increase the tension.

- Change-upI came to the gym with no plan in mind, (generally not a great workout strategy) and I decided I would just warm-up, chat it up and see what direction the workout session would ultimately take. The northwest corner of the gym beckoned. Most of what I like to do...
- How To Quickly Add 15 lbs of Muscle Mass…Guaranteed! This is a good one from Eric Cressey who, like me, loves deadlifts. In an untrained lifter, deadlifts are a guaranteed 15 pounds of muscle mass. Think about it: you’re using your entire upper back, glutes, hamstrings, core musculature, and forearms. If you haven’t done anything with these muscles before,...
- Val’s In the House!Val came to the "Northwest Corner" at the gym to get in some crosstraining while she heals from a nasty groin pull. (Oh yeah, I KNOW about those)! While she warmed up elsewhere, I got started with several rounds of Burgener's famous warm-up I continued with 5x3 of High Hang...
- Back Squats 5×5Monday night is the busiest night in the gym so I had to secure one of the two racks in the corner. Not only did I get a rack to do my modest back squat workout next to a couple of heavy hitter lifters, one of who said he is...
- July Crossfit TotalAfter a rest day, I thought I was ready to do the Crossfit Total but my allergies are still hanging on. Yet, in spite of it, I had posted some good totals on my lifts, only 10 lbs less than my PR and 15 lbs more than my CFT last...
- The Power CleanLast night Jon Curry and I trained with power cleans and squat cleans. I went more with the former. Many lifters and strength coaches consider the power clean one of the top three most beneficial compound lifts with the deadlift and the squat. For that reason, athletes at all levels...
