Crossfitters, college and high schools coaches and their athletes for over 20 years have used Dynamax Med Balls. In my opinion having used them myself and taken a clinic by it’s creator, Coach Jim Cawley, I think they are the finest balls out there. They are soft balls and have a "friendly" feel to them, regardless of the weight. You can really fling the Dynamax at high velocity and they are easy to catch. In fact, their primary question is, Can I catch this ball when thrown at its highest velocity? If the answer is yes, you have a training tool for life.

They come in weights from 4-20 lbs yet all balls are the same size. The quality of construction is superb. On their site, you can see their manual, training basics and video.

(I have a birthday coming up and the 20 pounder is on my wish list to use for the Crossfit Wall Ball shots).

Speaking of superb, I had that kind of workout today, though no Dynamax…

I warmed up by doing some of the Crossfit warm-up exercises along with empty bar squats, presses and jerks and an occasional overhead squat from the snatch.

I began with week 5 of my back squat program by adding another dime to the bar, so for my first 5×5 I was at 165 pounds. The emphasis is tight form-always. The second 5×5 is 50 lbs less at 115 lbs and at this weight, I stay in the hole for 3 seconds each lift. This is starting to get serious and soon I will not be able to add much more to the session, but not quite yet.

I performed the Friday posted Crossfit WOD which was,

Shoulder press 1-1-1-1-1 reps
135/145/155/145/145/
Push press 3-3-3-3-3 reps
145/155/160/135/
Push Jerk 5-5-5-5-5 reps
95/105/115/135/145/

I hope I have something in the tank for tomorrow when I am scheduled do do my PPP workout, Positively Primitive Pulls. we will see how the recovery goes.

  1. How To Choose the Right Medicine BallAccording to the Dynamax site, the rule of thumb for the best weight is choosing a ball that is "light enough where it does not interfere with normal movement AND allows you to throw at high velocity." Dynamax Clean & Jerks  Fresh back (or freshly baked), from the San Diego Certification, Steve and Denise gave us the benefit of some of what they learned and performed.  Rather than using a bar or pvc to practice the Clean & Jerk movements, we used a Dynamax ball, in my case, a 14 pounder to perform...
