More Chocolate Milk, Please

Not too long ago, MFBB happily wrote on the benefits of using chocolate milk as an optimal sports recovery drink and I have been enjoying mine since.

But it seems there has been controversy raging on internet forums, especially over at T-Nation as to what the ideal post-workout  recovery drink is. Lyle McDonald has written about the benefits of milk as a recovery beverage in “Milk: The New Sports Drink? A Review”.

Manhattan Beach Sand Dune Intervals

Yesterday, I was in Hermosa Beach for a party reuniting old friends and it was a wonderful time. Had I thought about it more, I would have, (you all remember woulda, coulda, shoulda?) gotten there earlier and drove one beach city over to Manhattan Beach to do a sand dune workout.

What prompted me that it’s time to hit the dune again was an article by John Berardi and Scot Prohaska titled “Indecent Intervals” where they outline their experiences and interval workouts with the famous sand dune.

If you can’t make it to the sand dune for the intervals, you’re not off the hook. Berardi and Prohaska share 4 more gut-wrenching interval workouts every bit as challenging as the sand dune.

Mixing In Bodyweight Exercises

Most of my workouts recently have been barbell and kettlebell routines, but one other type of workout I also do has of late been largely ignored because I have been having so much fun doing the others. Yet, bodyweight exercises can be done anywhere and anytime and all you have to bring is your body.

T-Nation has an excellent article on bodyweight training by strength coach Brad Kaczmarski.

After you have read this article, you can get much more in the way of routines and information over at BWC.

There are plenty of other great BW exercises to be found on the internet, including basics by Craig Stovall.

Now drop down and give me 20, slacker!

Dan John

Most of you reading this know who Dan John is and know that he is not one of those hairdressers with two first names. (Unless that is a closely guarded secret not being shared with the fitness community). Much has been written about Dan, so I am not going to add in much more than my .02 worth except to say if you have not read his stuff, you should.

His site is loaded with great articles and he has a newsletter called “Get Up” which should keep you busy reading for some time. I am just finishing reading his book “From the Ground Up“, which can be downloaded free as a pdf file. Seriously, if you train with barbells and haven’t read it, you need to go there now and get a copy. Read it and then go back and re-read it.It is that good, IMO.

Dan is also a frequent contributor to the forum at Performance Menu. (Hey, even Moynihan is a Dan John fan)!

For current Dan John stuff, go to T-Nation.

As Dan would advise, pick it up, put it over your head or carry it or throw it. Remember, the body is one piece.
