Starting Strength: Rippetoe & Staley

Mark Rippetoe

Two of the best minds in strength training, Coach Mark Rippetoe and Coach Charles Staley sit down for a very interesting 4 part conversation in the new Starting Strength Series.

Charles Staley

They cover some very good topics opening with Coach Staley discussing his Bed and Barbell training, Escalating Density Training (EDT), Further into the interview, they get into Olympic lifting for over 40 year olds, including debunking the myths of how hard they are to learn. Their discussion of what constitutes an athlete is the stuff the generates debate in the forums.

Both coaches also discussed their first lifting competitions and agree that doing your first meet as a Master is more rewarding because it’s means more to you than as a 19 year old kid. I have yet to do a meet, so perhaps I’ll find this out for myself.

Both coaches were amused and confused about what goes on in commercial gyms. We can all relate to this and, of course, have our own stories we could add. An interesting observation Coach Staley made was that most people do not know how to use a barbell and there is an intimidation factor involved.

Staley was an an early adopter on the internet which opened a discussion of how the internet has influenced the fitness world.

You can also find both of these coaches on Facebook.

Finally, the Starting Strength Series is a new feature and you may want to also check out the excellent interview with EliteFTS star, Jim Wendler.
