Really Elite Fitness
I just read where NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, James Lofton will make his first visit to Green Bay’s famed Packers Fan Fest event. It brought back a good memory from my younger running days. I sometimes would run hill repeats up a beautiful grass hill overlooking Lake Michigan.
One sunny, hot summer day, I was hoofin’ it up the hill, thinking I am all that when the long-legged Lofton bounded up that hill and passed me like I was standing still. It was an awesome performance and today still a vivid memory. The man was an elite athlete and trained liked one.
A few days ago, I did a post of the Top 10 fitness cliches and “elite fitness” was one, if not the most egregious example of cheapening what elite fitness really is, in my opinion. “Forgery of Elite Fitness”, er, “forging elite fitness” just doesn’t measure up. Let me show you an example of what does. Randy Moss of the New England Patriots will surely be in the NFL Hall of Fame one day, just as James Lofton is. The only way you get there is by being elite. Take a look at a clip of how Randy trains, but more importantly, listen to what he says.
Moss is but one of many elite professional and collegiate athletes who train at rarified elite levels. We can learn much from these athletes even if we cannot train at their level but most of us can never, ever claim to be products of “elite fitness”.
