Raising the Training Bar

A little over a month ago, in “Random and Structured Training” I wrote of the differences of each type of programming and said I trained sort of in between the both with my training approach.

I am in the midst of the third week of highly structured and programmed training after signing on with my friend, pro strongman Scott Brengel of EastWestStrength, (not sure if he is my “friend” anymore)!

Scott is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, C.S.C.S., which makes him eminently over-qualified to train and and coach me. It is probably because he respects his elders that he takes on my “hard case”. If you went to the NSCA website, you would see there are two types of certifications they offer. Besides the CSCS, for athletes, there is the NSCA-CPT for certified personal trainers, who work with both “active” and “sedentary” people. So while Scott is qualified in his role, I am probably am not in mine! No matter, though, I can hang!

I have two other training partners, one of whom, a 40 year old, hard-hitting, but currently injured boxer; the other, a 23 year old rugby player. Those guys are the athletes and I am gravy training off them, much to my benefit!

As I have been doing each week, these new and improved training sessions have been posted here. This is where the printed word doesn’t do justice to the sessions themselves. Tuesday and Thursday are heavy high volume days with some Westside Barbell influence. Saturday is some additional Olympic lifting and assistance speed lifts before going out in the parking lot and hitting it hard with work capacity stuff. Brutal. My CNS has been hammered for the first two weeks but I think I am beginning to neurally adapt to the higher threshold and the DOMS has also left.

The difference between what I have been doing and what I am now doing couldn’t be any greater. The lifts I thought I knew how to do are now getting overhauled by Scott who does more than just train; he coaches, coaxes and teaches. He doesn’t miss a thing either!

If you have the opportunity to train with a good CSCS coach especially one who is also a good athlete in his or her own right, I encourage you to train with one.

In an example of perfect timing, as I finished last night’s session, a massage therapist set up for a free 10 minute massage which actually went 20 minutes and I had to listen to her non-stop commercial for the chiropractic office she works out of. Fortunately, I am well-trained in tuning out chatty women. It is a man-skill!
