I have a fair number of posts involving athletes and training over the age of 40 so it makes good sense to add a new category to MFBB especially seeing how cut up former NFL star, 47 year old Herschel Walker looks in his MMA debut. Since this is a new category for this blog, Mr. Walker keeps the bar pretty high.

There is no question Walker is a gifted athlete genetically but his training is highly consistent despite being unorthodox. He is known to rely on bodyweight exercises and machines rather than free weights and does very high repetitions in his training. He told Jim rome that he has been doing 2,500 sit-ups and 1,500 push-ups every morning since high school. I have to admit some serious doubt to those numbers; that’s insane! (From Walker’s Wikipedia page).

Over the last 20 years, Walker claims he is at 2% body fat, sleeps 4 hours a night and eats only an evening meal consisting of salad, soup and bread. (Maybe for his next thing, he can become a monk).

In addition to his prodigious football and new MMA careers, the 47 year old has a 6th degree black belt in tae kwon do, has run 100 meters in 10.22 seconds, 100 yards in 9.3 seconds and nearly made the Olympics in the sprint relay. He did make the 1992 Olympics in the two-man bobsled, finishing 7th. He also won two back-to-back American Superstars competitions.

He is now in his latest athletic endeavor, MMA and as you saw in the video, won his debut.

Said with admiration, Walker is a “freak of nature”.
