Calorie Restricted Diets Made Simple

I have posted here several articles and posts by Warrior Diet guru, Ori Hofmekler along with the scientific references to back up his findings.

But not today. No science. Instead, I will have internet fitness celebrity, the iconoclastic and prickly Rant Irishman, of the the now-famous Moynihan Institute break down all you need to know about calorie restricted diets in his post, “Exercise is Bullshit“. If you want credentials, I can tell you this. Rant Irishman has probably been banned from more fitness sites than you have ever joined. How is that for cred?

Exercise is bullshit.

“I am loving this Don Blue routine. I have altered it even more to accommodate for more recovery and better results. I am doing it like this. Monday 10 sets of 10 reps in the squat. Wednesday 10 sets of 10 reps in the bench. Friday 10 sets of 10 reps in the deadlift. If I feel like it I may do some pull-ups of hanging legs raises but that’s it. It takes about 45-60 minute to complete. I was finding that 2 days of squats and then deads was frying my lower back.

On days when I don’t lift I walk to work and maybe one day I do some heavy bag work. I have already dropped 5 pounds and it has nothing or little to do with exercise. I have simply altered my eating habits to consume fewer calories. Diets don’t work and neither does exercise if your goal is losing weight. Calorie restriction is the only thing that works and even in gimmicky diets like the Zone and Atkins it’s the calorie restriction that ultimately does the job. Most of us just eat too much.

Here’s how I am eating these days. No carbs till after 6:00 pm. I don’t eat breakfast and never really have. Breakfast is gay and everyone knows it. For lunch I eat a meat and a vegetable. Small sized. Later I eat a regular meal like anyone else would but I don’t eat seconds or anything. That’s enough food for anyone. Bam I dropped 5 pounds in a week. I think there is something to eating carbs after a workout. The body seems to metabolize them better. Not eating carbs is simply a silly notion for an athlete.

Yoga and stretching are an after thought these days. I still do them in moderation but I found that when I train like I have been I don’t need all this prehab/rehab jazz. What’s more important is that I really relax as much as possible. Easier said that done but I found ways. Turning off TV, radio and other distractions helps a lot. Reading good fiction helps as well as meditation and centering prayer. Oh yeah and plenty of steams and rubs. I found a rub school that does rubs for $30 and a no tip policy. That I can afford weekly.

To me all this prehab/rehab and layers upon layers of other crap that people feel compelled to do to keep them in the game are overkill and just another way for Dragon Door types and Crossfit types to keep their hands in your wallet. Fuck that. If you’re that banged up from your workout than your workout is not working for you. You are working for it. I was reading an article about Louie Simmons the other day that listed his injuries including several broken backs! OK he has balls I guess but other than that I don’t get it. If that’s your idea of getting fit then good luck with that. Long after you retire to a wheel chair I’ll still be moving.

Why do people feel so compelled to overdo things? I have been able to maintain superior health by doing three exercises in a week and if the snow is heavy that day I skip the exercise and shovel instead. I lift fairly light. I don’t mess around with prehab/rehab nonsense. If I feel tweaked I back off on what I am doing. The physique will take care of itself with proper calorie restriction without getting hysterical about eating sugar and carbs. I can still move respectable weight training like this and more importantly I stay healthy. And my walking is simply walking places. I walk to work or to meet a friend for coffee. It’s not some big display with a walking costume and pumping my arms like a douchebag so all the world knows I’m not just walking I am “power walking”. Bullshit. Pumping the arms and walking like some dork has no added benefit to simply walking.

My wife and I were discussing weight loss the other day. She is good at maintaining her figure because she eats right meaning she doesn’t eat too much. Although she has felt she has put on a few pounds over the holidays. When I asked what she was going to do she said “eat less”. She doesn’t care much for exercise and stays plenty busy keeping up after 4 boys.

I was thinking back to a time when my weight was at it lowest on a consistent basis. I was living in Japan and my diet consisted of mainly fish, seaweed and polished rice. It was mainly a rice diet. The Japanese simply don’t eat much and what they do it is pretty healthy. I know the low carb lunatics will wring their chubby hands over white rice but really what the fuck. If you look at the rest of the world especially in culture where obesity is low you will find they eat less than we do. All these fatties talking about slow metabolism this and glandular bullshit that are lying. Stop eating long enough and you will loose weight. Try it sometime. You’d be amazed you fat fucks”.
