From the ashes of Met-Rx Fitness Center which went out of business towards the end of 2008 comes a new gym for our little corner of Orange County, Brian Hood’s An American Gym.

Former Met-Rx trainer, Brian Hood bought out nearby Tommy’s Boxing Gym in a troubled economy and a tough business in any economy. Brian is following his dream and putting all his energy and resources into making An American Gym a big success

Brian is a an accomplished, dynamic guy and each time I walk through the doors, there is a new improvement in place. Just the other day, there were thousands of dollars of new Body Master machines installed in the 8,000 square foot facility and a fresh paint job.

The boxing and kickboxing business is still the driver at this athletic training facility but in addition, there is general fitness, powerlifting, strongman, Olympic lifting, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, personal training, sport-specific training and a boot camp to be run by pro strongman, Scott Brengel. In a word, there is something for every fitness, strength and MMA enthusiast here.

I love this place because it embodies what, in my opinion, what a real gym should be. At American Gym, we  train “old school’ like athletes instead of doing stability ball bicep curls in a corporate gym or one tries to become one.

Scott adds,

“When Brian told me that he wanted to take a chance on this gym, I knew in my heart that this move would be a defining moment in both his life and mine.  Being a strength coach in today’s fitness world is a daunting task. We are all being pushed to open up our own warehouse gyms to accomodate the needs of our athletes. Gyms are all morphing into family fitness centers. Gym owners are turning into passionless businessmen watering these facilities down with so many rules that isolate and exile any member that is seriously trying to enhance their physical prowess and training to excel at whatever sport or activity in which their passions lie. Hats off to Brian for following his passion and for having the cajones to ante up. I have done and will do anything I can to help him make what will be the Last American Gym – a success.”

Welcome to An American Gym. If you are in the neighborhood, drop by and get a real workout in a real gym!
