RIP Bo Diddley

From Mike Tempo of the Bonedaddys…

“Thanx and a tip ‘O the hat for a life well rocked!
Ellas McDaniel AKA Bo Diddley.
He was a mentor, collaborator & friend to The Bonedaddys and we’ll
never forget that he let us take a small part in his music. Here’s
something we did with him in ‘87.”

The Bonedaddys ask Bo Diddley where he got his beat the “Palango”. Which he replies ” I didn’t steal it” and “The church gave it to me”.

This song was recorded in 1987 but was not released until the Bonedaddy’s album “Garage Sale”.

Long live Bo!

Bo Diddley was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Post-Workout Pork and Beans

Tonight’s workout pretty much sucked so afterwards, I enjoyed some Pork and Beans. Now you can too.

Waterslide

Mike Tempo and his band The Bonedaddys, who I have previously featured on this blog have a new cd out called “waterslide”. You can listen to clips and order it from CD Baby. Read the following liner notes:

The Bonedaddys are L.A.’s original “Worldbeatniks” (since 1985) and one of the very first American bands to be described as Worldbeat. Well known for their live shows, The Bonedaddys now present their 6th album, “waterslide.” The Bonedaddys songs feature soulful vocals and a twin guitar attack with saxophone propelled by bass, drums and percussion. The 13 grooves on “waterslide” are a merry-go-round of styles and range from rock, blues, mambo, soca, Latin, psycho-billy two-step and rock-steady to a twang afro-surf meets spaghetti-western instrumental. “waterslide” is a gumbo stirred up in light refracted through a prism called Los Angeles, California, USA. All songs are designed to move butts of all persuasions.

Here is a nice sax riff from “Ought To Give It Away“.

5 x 5’s

Just in time for episode 4 in my 16 week back squat progression, Scott Bird posted this excellent tutorial on the squat to his blog, straighttothebar.com

This is part of an excellent series on squatting which can be found here. Hat Tip to Scott!

These videos should serve me well today as I continue along with my squat progression which I will do and post later.

I viewed a couple of the videos and took away some valuable information and applied them in today’s workout. The ROM exercises and goblet squat were most helpful and were added into my warm-up.

This is the 4th week in my 16 week squat progression, so that means add another dime to the bar.

155×5x5 and then 105×5x5, this time staying in the hole for 3 seconds.

My next 5×5 were pull-ups.

I wrapped up with 3 sets of Farmer Walks carrying two 70 lb dbs 200′ with a 5 minute rest between the sets.

For tomorrow, it is time for some bodyweight work with a good metabolic blast.

The Bonedaddys

One of my favorite local bands to listen to while I am working out is The Bonedaddys from Santa Monica, CA. I have had more PRs set while listening to their music, (before, not during the lift)!

THE BONEDADDYS serve up a wild party mix of African, Caribbean, R&B, New Orleans and Rock & Roll rhythms but the bottom line is always a soulful and dance-able ambiance. An irreverent group of characters centered around percussionist Mike Tempo, THE BONEDADDYS are in their second decade creating music that has been described in performance as an unstoppable, sweat-ridden orgy of rhythm.

Go here to see them perform live. (Requires Flash 9). You can hear more of their music at their website or iTunes. This is music for the waist down, so get sweaty wid it!

Incendio

In November 2003, while making a feeble and half-hearted attempt at Christmas shopping in a light rain at the Metropointe Mall, across the street from South Coast Plaza, I heard some fascinating, tasty guitar riffs coming from further down the walkway. This is where I saw and heard Incendio for the first time and I have been hooked ever since. The next time they were in the area, I brought Val and she too became a fan. Since then, we have heard them every chance we get when they are in the area and we consider Jim, JP, Liza & Joe among our friends and look forward to the next time we can see them and hear them play! They are terrific musicians and even better people.

Ring of Fire

Today was an ideal day for a skate around Back Bay in Newport Beach. The total distance of this hilly course is 10 miles. The weather was cool and there was a nice breeze. Just right…almost. I had some after effects from yesterday’s WOD of running and squats, but I still was good to go. The only problem was I was a bit distracted. I had the iPod on shuffle and the songs that came on weren’t what I was in the mood for.

When Johnny Cash came on with “Ring of Fire”, I got all fired up and sang along while jamming up the hills on Irvine. Amazing what a good song can do.

I covered the course in 50 minutes, which is about 12 mph.

Youssou N’Dour

A good workout for me has often included good music, so once a week or so, I will feature an artist I enjoy and a music video. I first heard Youssou N’Dour on a Peter Gabriel album “So” released in 1984 singing back up vocals on “In Your Eyes”. Youssou has a very unique, distinctive and haunting voice and since that album he has gone on to become one of the world’s top vocalists. He has performed with Peter Gabriel, Neneh Cherry and others. I had the opportunity to see him and his band, Le Super Etoile, in a concert and it was terrific. Youssou is from Dakar, Senegal and his songs are in English, French and his native Wolof language. Go to his website and read his bio. Continue here and watch and listen to “7 Seconds” with Neneh Cherry.
