Every Saturday morning at American Gym in Costa Mesa, CA, local strongman athletes come to to train in the events to be featured in the Southern California’s Strongest Man 2010 competition in Huntington Beach to be held on Saturday, March 27th, 2010.

On March 6th, local strength athletes, including the 2009 champion, Sean Demarinis gathered to fine-tune their lifts. Here is a sneak preview of the action you can expect on the 27th.

Here are the bios of the athletes slated to compete. If you are up to it, go ahead and handicap them!

Last year’s SoCal Strongest Man Competition was a smashing success and will even be better this year. The fans and the athletes both enjoyed the up-close format and the energy was contagious!

Scott Brengel of EastWestStrength.com hosts this highly competitive even on the beach in Huntington Beach, California…Surf City USA!

Here are the details. Hope to see you there!

SoCal Strongest Man 2010 Flyer

I have a fair number of posts involving athletes and training over the age of 40 so it makes good sense to add a new category to MFBB especially seeing how cut up former NFL star, 47 year old Herschel Walker looks in his MMA debut. Since this is a new category for this blog, Mr. Walker keeps the bar pretty high.

Val’s Ideal Half Marathon

img_1290

The weather was cool and overcast, the course varied and fast. Couple that with Val’s preparation and taper, her 1/2 marathon PR was bound to drop and it did, by better than a minute, finishing at 1:40:13.

The 2009 Avia OC Marathon and Half-Marathon started at Fashion Island and Newport Beach and finished at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa; just down the street from where we live. Runners weaved through Newport Beach, Irvine and Costa Mesa bot both events and through parts of Santa Ana for the marathon.

Val’s strategy for a PR was simple: follow this guy.

He did his job well and Val stayed at his pace to the end. And I did my job well by getting her to the start on time and hollering out the customary “Go Val!” as she came up the hill from Back Bay.

This race was close to getting me fired up to begin running again, but not quite! I’ll enjoy Val’s PR’s instead.

Strongmen Ruled the Beach Today

The big day finally arrived and it could not have been a better day with the sun shining and moderate temperatures starting in the mid-50-s up to the mid-60’s. I could tell early on this would be great competition with a big, enthusiastic  turnout. It was all that and much more.

Scott Brengel and his team did a fine job with this exciting and fast-paced event. Competitors and spectators  alike were quick to agree and everyone was caught up in the energy. Each event seemed to draw the crowd in closer and closer to the athletes and by the time the last event, the Atlas Stones got underway, the athletes were surrounded by a wildly cheering and enthusiastic crowd, which stoked up their fire even more.

Take a look at the slideshow of the pictures I got, or if you prefer go to the strongman pictures to comment and download what you like. If I get any more, I will put them up as well.

The following video clips will give you an idea of the intensity of the competition.

The 2008 NAO was held last weekend, December 5-7  in beautiful Chandler, Arizona. I would have liked to attended that event. Maybe I would have learned something useful to make my own lifts work better! From all accounts, the event was a success! Read the rest of this entry

3rd Annual City of Angels Half Marathon

All we could do is hope for better conditions than the monsoon Val ran in and I stood in for the Turkey Trot race last weekend and fortunately, we got ideal conditions for the 7,300+ runners and spectators at the 3rd Annual City of Angels Half Marathon. The temperature for the 7:30 AM start was about 62F with no wind. This was a point to point race starting at the L.A. Zoo and ended up in downtown L.A., my stomping grounds for part of my work week.
