Archive for February, 2009

According to strength coach Steven Morris in an article over at EliteFTS,  here are the top 11 exercises that build better athletes. I was in full agreement with most of them and do some of them consistently, (in spite of my relative lack of athleticism). The exercises I do regularly are in bold.

  1. Deadlift
  2. Box Squats
  3. Clean and Jerks
  4. Box Front Squats
  5. Romanian Deadlifts
  6. Rows
  7. Side Lunges
  8. Dumbbell Inclines
  9. Sandbags
  10. Prowler
  11. Snatch Grip Deadlift

I look forward to adding in the others I haven’t been doing, although I am surprised not to see the standard back squat in his top 11.

Take a look at Morris’ article for his descriptions of each.

Top 10 Most Annoying Fitness Cliches

Every sport, no every sector of our life is littered with cliches and “buzz-words”. Some of course, are much more annoying than others. Many started being cool but have a short shelf life and should just go away.

Words and their meanings are fascinating.

A Challenger to Chocolate Milk

It is going to be hard to get me to change from chocolate milk to anything else for a post-workout recovery drink. The high-priced drinks for me have come and gone, the most recent being Muscle Milk, which I have come to loathe. There is a healthier alternative to my “brown milk” that I am willing to give a try, but only for health reasons, mind you! What am I talking about?

The forum can also be accessed in the tab “Forum” at the top of MFBB. See you over there!

Inventist Orbitwheel and Outline Skates

Can you skateboard? How about rollerblade? Then you probably can Orbitwheel.

I don’t skateboard, but I am pretty good on a pair of inline skates and these look not only functional and even practical, but a lot of fun!

Steven Chen started Inventist as a way to bring his distinctive inventions to life, according to his website at inventist.com.

This is a great idea and it will be interesting to see if it catches on here in Newport and Huntington Beach and everywhere else.

Ok, so I started the week with a rest day, so shoot me! I started slowly and kept it that way but rallied at the end of the week. Sort of.

Steve Cotter’s Teacup Shoulder Mobility

From years of skating (and falling), my shoulders have taken a beating from absorbing the shock of those falls. A trainer friend of mine repeatedly has said to treat your shoulders like glass. Well, that doesn’t give much credit to the structural integrity of the joint, but it does point to it’s vulnerability.

Training Log, Week Ending 2/8/09

This week got off to a slow start with a bad bout of allergies, but things began to improve by Thursday and ended on a high note with a couple of personal bests in both the squat and deadlift on Sunday.

Michael Phelps’ Favorite Munchie Food

frosted-flakesthumb

It was announced that the endorsement deal Michael Phelps had with Kelloggs Frosted Flakes will not be renewed at the end of February due to that now-famous Phelps bong photo. I’ll bet if he had an endorsement deal with Doritos or Funyuns instead, there would be no such cancellation.

Come to think of it, do you remember during the Olympics, Phelps said he ate 12,ooo calories a day while training. I had a tough time believing that but NOW it makes sense!

It seems to be the while marijuana is indeed illegal, it probably isn’t as bad as the tooth decay, obesity and diabetes you can get while eating Frosted Flakes. Just sayin’!
